PREREQUISITES
Lectures, classes and exercises. Attendance for the course is compulsory.


COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to provide the students with an introduction to the Japanese language and an overview of the social life, history and cultural background in Japan.


CONTENTS
Language conditions in Eastern Asia. The standard Japanese and its phonological system, pronunciation and intonation. Grammar and practice exercises.
Learning Romaji and the Japanese syllable writing hiragana.
Introduction to katakana and kanji.
Oral skills and reading
Reading elementary texts. Simple conversation exercises.
Writing skills.
Cultural studies.
An overview of the political, economic and social development in Japan.


TEACHING
The greater part of the teaching consists of classes where active participation is required. There will also be group exercises and individual reports.


EXAMINATION
The course is assessed continuously through an active participation in
the different parts. The course will end with a written examination.
The course will be graded as above.
