COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students:
- develop ability to illuminate the specific culture in Norrland/Norrbotten
- acquire knowledge of the distinctive character of Norrbotten
- develop a view of Norrbotten in the wider context of the Arctic area of the Scandinavian countries and the Kola Peninsula, the Barents region and Europe.


CONTENTS
- Places of cultural interest in the northern parts of Norrland. Historical perspectives.
- Town-planning, urban environment, architecture
- Luleå - seat of the county and the diocese (walking-tour through the city)
- Kiruna - mining community
- Haparanda/Torneå - border town (excursion/s/)
- Jokkmokk - market place
- Gammelstad - historical church retreat village
- Christianizing and building of churches
- The organization of the diocese
- The division of parishes, municipalities rural districts
- The church and the education system
- Nomadic and Lappish schools
- Higher education in the northern parts of Norrland
- Upper secondary school, college, university
- Popular movements
- Folk high-schools
- Efforts in the field of adult education
- Women's history in Norrbotten
- The profile of Norrbotten in literature, art and music
- Struggles for ethnic identity in Lappland and Tornedalen
- The growth of tourism, in particular tourism in the mountains


TEACHING
Lessons, excursions and seminars.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral examination, individually and in group.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass, Distinction.
