COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire knowledge of:
- children's development of reading and writing skills and the links between spoken and written language
- the mathematical language and development of mathematical concepts
- current research in the field
Students are also to learn:
- how to encourage the language development and mathematical understanding of children and adolescents
- how to create a good environment for learning
Students are also to learn an approach to children learning that:
- creates a positive reading and writing culture
- makes the acquisition of mathematical knowledge a part of children's everyday lives
- makes children's knowledge and experiences the basis of teaching


CONTENTS
The concept of numbers, natural numbers and the four rules of arithmetic
Language development; speech, reading and writing
Methods for encouraging the development of reading and writing skills and mathematical thinking
Current research on reading and writing skills
Current research on the didactics of mathematics
Computer-based programs that encourage the acquisition of reading, writing and mathematical skills


TEACHING
Students that have done nursery and infant teacher training, recreation instructor training, and teacher training for primary school will form joint classes. The course will be signified by problem-based work procedures and by integration of theoretical studies and work experience. Students will do four weeks of teaching practice and field studies in preschool, in the first form in comprehensive school, or in school-age child care which is integrated with the first form in school.

EXAMINATION
Written and oral presentation of an individual "portfolio," and participation in seminars.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass.
