TIMEPERIOD: Q3-Q4. LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Hans Gelter Univ lekt PREREQUISITES General admission requirements. Participation in the association "Project Nepal". COURSE AIM The aims of the course are that students: - achieve personal development by carrying responsibility for, planning and realizing a large-scale project through participation in the association "Project Nepal" - experience one of the poorest developing countries in the world, its enormous problems, its melting-pot of different peoples and cultures, and the conflict between western culture and ancient traditions - use the experience from Nepal in their analysis of hostility towards foreigners, racism, cultural clashes, education etc. - develop ability to view Sweden and Swedish schools, culture, society and nature in alternative ways, and acquire a more holistic outlook on people and nature - gain valuable experience and establish contacts in the third world that can be of use in their future professional role Students are also to acquire knowledge and understanding of: - transculturalism, multiculturalism and anti-racism through studies of the different peoples of Nepal - Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and their origin and influence on everyday life in Nepal - the historical, political and religious development of central Asia - the different types of nature of The Himalayas, their origin, geological processes etc. - ecology in the different types of nature in Nepal, from the tropical rain forest of Terrai to the alpine environment of The Himalayas - local and global environmental problems caused by cultural clashes, tourism, felling and erosion - development problems in a country of poverty, insufficient education, lack of infrastructure etc. - the educational system in a developing country of no economic resources, non-authoritative ways of bringing up children and non-authoritative teaching methods CONTENTS Planning, preparations and realization of a travel of three weeks to and in Nepal. Project study, individually or in groups, during visits in schools and trekking. Students may freely choose to focus their projects on any of the aspects of the course. The examination will be based on the project. TEACHING Lectures, seminars and supervision. The three-week travel in Nepal will consist of visits in schools in Kathmandu during one week and trekking and visits in schools in the hilly country of the Annapurna district during the remaining two weeks. EXAMINATION Written and oral presentation of project. COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass. ITEMS/CREDITS | |
