PREREQUISITES
Basic qualifications.

COURSE AIM
The course will give a basic knowledge in heat transfer phenomena, heat recovery, dimensioning of
furnace and heat recovery systems, combustion technology and related environmental issues. The
course will also give a brief overview of relevant measurement techniques.

CONTENTS
The extent of each part is given in %.
Conduction (14%). The Fourier heat transfer equation, steady-state as well as transient conduction,
numerical and approximate solutions, graphical representations.
Convection (18%). Natural and forced convection and the influence of the boundary layer. Reynolds
number. Heat transfer between liquid/gas and solid bodies/surfaces. Working formulas and graphical
representations.
Radiation (13%). Nature of radiation. Blackbody radiation, grey radiation, gaseous emission and
absorption. Calculation of heat transfer. Working formulas and graphical representation.
Combustion technology (15%). Overview of different fuels as oil, coal, natural gas, wood, peet and
municipal wastes. Use of different fuels are discussed from the combustion technology point of view
as well as from an economical and environmental point of view.
Furnace systems (3%)Description of furnaces and furnace systems used in heating, heat treatment and
combustion applications.
Measurement techniques (3%). Temperature measurements with thermocouples and radiation pyrometers.
Determination of gas composition with physical and chemical methods.
Heat recovery (17%). An overview of techniques used for heat recovery from process streams. Heat
exchangers and the optimisation of heat exchangers.
Environmental aspects (11%). Emission of dust, sulphur, nitrogen oxides, heavy metals and organic
compounds and the means to minimize these emissions are discussed.
Study trip (6%). Visit to some industry to study the furnace systems used, their construction, energy
utilisation etc.

TEACHING
The education consist of lectures, exercises, laboratory work and study trips. Laboratory work and
study trips are compulsory.
This is a tutored course, i.e. lectures will be given in Swedish, the students will receive tutoring in
