COURSE AIM
The course gives basic knowledge regarding the production of metals from both a chemical as well as
from a technical point of view.

CONTENTS
The content of each part is given in %.
Basic principles in process metallurgy (31%). Material and energy balances. Chemistry of solutions.
Activities. Chemical equilibrium. Thermodynamic treatment of systems with one or several components.
Unit operations within process metallurgy (40%). Pretreatment, sintering, roasting, smelting, converting
and refining. Application of thermodynamic and kinetic calculations on different processes. Process
systems.
Environmental technology (12%). Environmental regulations. The use of different methods for gas
treatment, e.g. cyclones, electrostatic precipitators, bag house filters.
Study visit (11%).

TEACHING
The education consists of lectures, exercises, laboratory work and study trips. Laboratory work and study
trips are compulsory.
This is a tutored course, i.e. lectures will be given in Swedish, the students will receive tutoring in
English. The examination will be given in English. Course material in English.

EXAMINATION
Approved laboratory reports, study trip and written exam with differentiated grades.
