PREREQUISITES
Good knowledge of chemistry an chemical engineering.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to inform the student about the techniques available for the
production of paper and bleaching of pulp. Emphasis will be placed on the production
of pulp produced via the Sulphate process.

CONTENTS
Raw materials for pulp production, Cellulosa chemistry, Properties of wood, Fiber
properties, De-barking, Chiping, Impregnation, Washing, Drying, Production of
chemical pulp, Sulphate process, Sulphite process, Dissolving pulp. Production of
mechanical pulp, pulp produced by grinding. TMP (thermomechanical pulp), CTMP
(chemical thermo-mechanical pulp), Chemical recovery in pulp manufacture, Bleaching
of pulp, Characterization of pulp, Economic and energy aspects concerning pulp
production.

TEACHING
The course is presented in the form of lectures and laboratory exercises. The mojority
of the lectures will be given by specialists form AssiDomän, Piteå. The laboratory
excercises will be performed at AssiDomän, Piteå.

EXAMINATION
An approved written examination with differentiated grades. Evaluation of the written
examination is performed according to Altenative B as described in "Regler för
tentamen".
