PREREQUISITES


COURSE AIM
The general objective of the final year thesis work is that the student should demonstrate that he/she can make use of acquired knowledge to independently analyse draw conclusions from the results of experimental work or a review.

CONTENTS
The thesis work should be performed using accepted research methodology. This implies that the student, as well as showing how existing technology is used, should demonstrate how new technology can be developed. The latter is what distinguishes the masters degree from lower engineering degrees. Thus the thesis work should firstly include a literature review and secondly demonstrate that the student can make use of the knowledge he/she has acquires during his/her education. The student should be able to recognize the general implications of his/her results suggesting areas of continued research.

The disciplines covered by the department are manufacturing engineering, materials processing, engineering materials (metallic and ceramic) and polymer engineering.

TEACHING
Instruction is in the form of personal supervision.The start of the work must be approved by the division head.

EXAMINATION
Written report: oral presentation; assessment of another thesis: attendance at at least a further two thesis presentations.
