Mechanical Engineering

MTM065 Mechanical Vibrations 6.0 ECTS credits

TIMEPERIOD:
Q I, Q III

LANGUAGE:English/Swedish

EXAMINER
Jan-Olov Aidanpää Univ lekt

PREREQUISITES
Ordinary differential equations.

COURSE AIM
The student
- should master the basic principles of mechanical vibrations and their properties.
- should be able to create simple physical models from real world engineering problems that at least can serve as a starting point in design.
- should not only be able to apply formulas and Matlab scripts, that are given in the course, but also understand the basic principles and assumptions they are formulated from. This will ensure that they are used correctly in accordance with the way they were created.
- should have some knowledge about how to measure mechanical vibrations.
- may also be able to extend the formulas and Matlab scripts given in the course.

CONTENTS
Foundations of vibrations. Forced or free vibrating systems with single or multiple masse. Natural frequencies of systems. Transient and random vibrations. Reduction of vibrations. Measurements.
An design analysis as an occasion for combining modelling, numerical/analytical solutions for model with measurements and design on a real world problem. A written report should be submitted.
