PREREQUISITES


COURSE AIM
To give the student ability to
- determine forces, moments, stresses, strains and deformations in general structural elements such as rods, shafts, beams and also to understand and to be able to use general design methods in strength of materials and machine elements.
- understand principle and use of different machine elements.
- tackle and solve problems in a methodical way.


CONTENTS
Strength of materials:
Definitions and basic concepts. Simple states of loading. Classification of materials. Constitutive relations. Torsion of shafts. Bending of beams, normal and shear stresses, deformations. Unsymmetrical bending. Instability. Energy methods. General states of stress and strain. Yield theories. Fracture mechanics. Fatigue.
Machine elements:
General survey, analysis and design of gears, roller bearings, journal bearings, brakes, clutches, chain transmissions, springs, etc. Tribology. Basic hydraulics.

TEACHING


EXAMINATION
Approved result in two written exams and a number of assignments and lab reports are required to pass the course.
