TIMEPERIOD: Q I-II LANGUAGE:English/Swedish EXAMINER Kjell Eriksson Univ lekt PREREQUISITES MTM062 Solid mechanics and Machine elements, MTM026 Plates and shells COURSE AIM The aim of the course is to provide the basics about using variational calculus and energy methods to solve structural and solid mechanics problems with modern and efficient techniques. CONTENTS Cartesian tensors: Tensor notation. Vector operations in tensor notation. Gauss's theorem. Theory of linear elasticity: Stress and strain. Equations of motion. Compatibility. Hook's law. Energy considerations. Calculus of variation: Simple functionals. The delta operator. Euler-Lagrange equations. Variational principles of elasticity. The methods of Ritz and Galerkin. Structural mechanics: The Timoshenko beam theory. The deflection of plates. Hamilton's principle. Vibrations of beams. Rayleigh-Ritz method for plates. Elastic stability of columns and plates. TEACHING The basic concepts are developed in lectures and applied through examples and exercises. EXAMINATION There is a written examination at the end of the course.
