PREREQUISITES


COURSE AIM
To give the student basic knowledge of the fundamentals of modern physics and astronomy and the ability to teach children such topics in elementary school.

CONTENTS
Relativistic mechanics: Invariance of physical laws. Relativity of length and time. The relativistic doppler effect.
Photons, electrons and atoms: Emission and absorption of light. The photoelectric effect. Line spectra and energy levels. The Bohr model. The laser. X-ray production and scattering.
The wave nature of particles and electron diffraction.
Quantum mechanics: The Schrödinger equation. Potential wells and tunneling.
The harmonic oscillator.
Atomic structure, molecules and condensed matter.
Nuclear physics: Binding energy, stability and nuclear structure. Radioactivity.
Fission an fusion. Biological effects of radiation.
Cosmology and astronomy.
Laboratory work.
