COURSE AIM
The course gives an orientation in space physics and astrophysics, as a preparation for the
advanced courses later in the programme. It also gives an insight into current frontline research,
in particular Swedish space research about the magnetosphere and the aurora. Visits to other institutes will give an overview of the total space activities in Kiruna.




CONTENTS
CONTENTS
Research and development in astrophysics, space physics and space technology in the world,
Sweden and Kiruna. Atmospheric physics and chemistry. The ionosphere. The near-earth magnetosphere and the origin of auroras. The solar system. Solar physics. Electromagnetic and other interactions between the sun and the earth. The planets and the interplanetary space. Ground-based space research. Astronomical observational methods. Physics of stars. The structure of galaxies and of the Universe. Cosmology.



TEACHING
TEACHING
Lessons, laboratory exercises, field exercises, project work, and visits to (for instance)
the Esrange rocket base and the Satellitbild company. The lessons are led by experts
in the various subtopics.



EXAMINATION
Laboratory exercises, projects and written exam.

The books are sold at IRF in Kiruna.


REMARKS
The course is given at the Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna during a three-week period. Course leader is Dr. Asta Pellinen-Wannberg at IRF. She is also contact person for further information. The course is open only for Space Engineering student, and those students from Öppen ingång that formally choose the Space Engineering programme in connection to choosing the course. The course includes approximately one week of project work in Luleå before the formal start of the teaching in Kiruna.
