Mechanical Engineering

MTF057 Quantum Physics for EEIGM 4.5 ECTS credits

TIMEPERIOD:
Q III

LANGUAGE:English/Swedish

EXAMINER
Johnny Ejemalm Univ lekt

PREREQUISITES
Mathematics for EEIGM.

COURSE AIM
The goal of the course is to give knowledge of
- the quantum physics description of matter
- statistical aspects of thermal motion of atoms and molecules

CONTENTS
Quantum mechanics is introduced together with a number of physical systems for which a qauntum treatment is necessary, e.g. electrons in atoms, the motion of atoms in molecules and solid matter, and electronic motion in crystalline materials. Additionally, the influence of temperature is treated with an emphasis on the Boltzmann factor, which gives relative probabilities for thermal excitations. A general knowledge from an engineering point of wiev is given in the areas x-ray, electronic theories for solid state, electric properties of metals and semiconductors as well as temperature radiation.

TEACHING
Teaching comprises of class lectures and a laboratory exercise and a computor exercise.

EXAMINATION
Written examination and laboratory work.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: U, 3, 4, 5

ITEMS/CREDITS
Laboratory work 0.00ECTS
Written exam 4.50ECTS
