TIMEPERIOD: LANGUAGE: EXAMINER John Abeysekera Univ lekt PREREQUISITES General eligibility for admission to university courses and a good knowledge in English. COURSE AIM The course will give the basic knowledge in the formation and functions of the human body and its capacity and limitation with respect to manual or physical work. It will also teach the students the measurements used in applied work physiology viz: energy expenditure, EMG and lung function tests. CONTENTS Functional organization of human body; Sensory organ; Skeletal muscular, Circulatory and respiratory systems; Muscular and lung physiology; Breathing and lung function tests; Energy metabolism; Heart rate, Oxygen consumption; Applied work physiology; dynamic and static work; physical work loads; working capacity; work organization; rest allowance; shift work; Fatigue in industry; symptoms; physical and mental fatigue; Physical exercise and performance; Food, energy and nutrition; Measurements technique in applied work physiology. TEACHING The course will have both theoretical teaching, consisting of lectures and practical work consisting of compulsory laboratory experiments.
