Civil and Mining Engineering

ABK017 Structural Engineering 6.0 ECTS credits

TIMEPERIOD:
Q II

LANGUAGE:Swedish

EXAMINER
L Fransson Forsk

PREREQUISITES
MTF008 Mechanics

COURSE AIM
To understand strength properties of materials and provide knowledge about structural behaviour and the principles of design. The education aims to provide basic knowledge of solid mechanics and structural analysis.

CONTENTS
Solid mechanics (30%): Terms such as stress, strain and elasticity in materials are defined. The relationship between applied loads and stresses in the material are explained.

Structural analysis (40%): Calculation of forces in trusses. Shear and moment in beams, force, deformation, stress and strain in beams. Stability and buckling.

Design (30%): Safety concepts and codes. Design methods are applied on commonly used steel and concrete structures.

Construction tasks: Each part of the course has a construction task to be solved individually by the students. Approved tasks result in 1.5 ects.

Laboratory experiments: Each part of the course has a laboratory experiment carried out by teams of four students. Approved experiments result in 1.5 ects. One experiment is the design and construction of a wooden bridge, in the form of a competition.

TEACHING
The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and assignments.
Assignments are compulsory.
