COURSE AIM The aims of the course are that students acquire comprehensive knowledge of essential historical contexts and an increased understanding of specific occurrences in society and in past time. Students are also to acquire knowledge of basic aspects of economic historical theory and methodology. CONTENTS ITEM 1. History of economics, 5 credits This aspect of the course consists of comprehensive studies of economic systems and patterns of purchase in older times. The relationship between political and economic history, the history of work, the significance of enterprise in a historical perspective, the history of economic doctrines, and more recent patterns of purchase including the colonial features of these, will also be studied. ITEM 2. Historical science and methodology, 2 credits History as a science. Different schools of thought. Principles for criticism of sources. Science and ideology. Changes of the main focus in the field. The relationship between political and economic history. The advances of social history, women's history, history of technology, environmental history etc. ITEM 3. Nordic history I, 3 credits The main features of the historical development of the Nordic countries, with the focus on Sweden. ITEM 4. Nordic history II, 2 credits State formation and national identity in the Scandinavian countries. Emphasis on the development in the Arctic area of the Scandinavian countries. ITEM 5. Global history before year1500. Political outline, 4 credits Comprehensive studies of the development of society in global perspective, e.g. the dissemination of the world population over the globe, early high cultures, important innovations, the spread of the world religions, power structures and social stratification, state formation and empires, economic systems, patterns of purchase and cultural encounters. ITEM 6. Global history after year 1500. Political outline, 4 credits Continued outline of the historical development in global perspective, in which a few essential historical events and problems will be high-lighted and studied in detail. Particular attention will be paid to the emergence of modern nations and political ideologies. The industrialization and the emergence of capitalism will also be studied. International relations will be analyzed from a geo-political perspective. TEACHING Lectures, lessons, seminars and group work. EXAMINATION Written and oral examination, individually and in group.
