COURSE AIM The aim of the course is to develop the students ability to analyse social stratification and cultural hegemony in Nordic level, encounter of cultures and ethnical groups in global level. The students should also see the connection between institutional changes and economical changes, They should develop the ability to combine theoretical understandings with emperical data related to the writing of a seminar paper. CONTENTS ITEM 1. Nordic Social and Cultural History An in-depth study of social and cultural history based on theses that are fairly recently published. The conditions in upper Norrland are in several cases in focus, among other things to prepare the writing of the paper, that in the majority of cases will start from archival matter, that are preserved within the county of Norrbotten and Västerbotten. ITEM 2. Geopolitics and Cultural Environments The theoretical approach is either geopolitical or based on modern peace and conflict research. The European continent and the Arab world are analysed from the aspect of integration or division. The centre of the item also includes some central encounter of cultures as well as metropolisis, which in its history reflect encounter of cultures, mixing of cultures and spreading of ideas. ITEM 3. Economical Systems and Institutional Changes 1700- The item includs a presentation of the economical development after 1700. The disposition is problem-based with its main point in the significans of the institutions for the economical development. The item also deals with a survey of the global development after1945. ITEM 4. B-Paper When choosing a subject there are no other limits then the paper should be based on primary matter of sources. The students can of practical reasons look for matters at local and regional archives as: the archives of Popular Movment i Norrbotten and Västerbotten-goal and result-directed control of the school, the archive of the Norrbotten Museum, Ragnar Lassinanttisamlingen at the University of Luleå, the archive of the Cathedral Chapter in Luleå or the municipal archives for examples in Luleå, Kiruna or Skellefteå. TEACHING Lectures, supervision, group discussions and seminars. The forms of examination are: writing, oral, assessment in groups, oral individual examination and report writing. EXAMINATION The examination is through obligatory work assignments and written examination. Examination is given at the end of each item. All tests and obligatory items must be passed to get a grade. If you get the grade pass you can not do the examination again to get a higher grade. Three written examinations. The writing of a B-paper. Active participation of discussions and examinations.
