PREREQUISITES
Applicants must have completed the courses PÄN400 and PÄN404.

COURSE AIM
The aims of the course are that students acquire knowledge of:
- the environment and the cycles of nature, so that they can understand the principles of environmental issues, develop ability to communicate knowledge of environmental issues, and in addition, conduct a line of argument about and take a stand in environmental issues
- how to plan and build a society in order to make it part of the cycle of nature
- how pollution is spread in the ground, the air and the water, which effects it has on the environment, and how waste and pollution is to be taken care of
- which habits and patterns of behavior that save natural resources and spare the environment, and furthermore, that students develop their ability to communicate such knowledge


CONTENTS
- Historical account. Environmental problems from a local, regional and global perspective. International environmental cooperation and Agenda 21. Laws and regulations in the environmental field.
- Solid, fluid and gaseous waste. Causes for and effects of the following environmental problems: greenhouse effect, rarefaction of the ozone layer, eutrophication, acidification, heavy metal and photochemical smog. The threats against biological variety.
- Basic microbiology and the roles of microorganisms in changes in nature, the degradation of toxic emission and other waste. Ames test.
- Survey of the flow of material and energy in a municipality. Use of fossil and renewable resources. Quality of energy and alternative energy sources. Processes of change in fields such as building and housing, food supply and transports. Conditions for the endurance of the life-sustaining system and the role of humanity in this matter.
- Sorting of domestic waste. Responsibility of producer. Dangerous and ecologically harmful waste. The process of composting. The process of decay. Storing waste. Emissions from storing places.
- Purification of drinking-water and sewage. Different types of drinking-water. How the sewage system works (well covers, fire extinguishing, exit of rain-water and snow, etc.).
- Use of GIS (Geographic Information System) in the field of environmental control. Geophysical measuring methods, for example for the mapping of the presence of ground water.
- Traffic planning. Effects of for example exhaust and noise on the environment.


TEACHING
Teaching practice in comprehensive school, form 4-6.
Lectures, lessons, laboratory work, seminars and study visits.
A project within the subject field will be introduced to the students in the beginning of the term. Students will work in groups of 2 or 3, each group contributing to the project. The presentation will be in writing in the form of a report, and orally in the form of a lesson put into its didactic context.


EXAMINATION
Examination on theoretical parts. Written and oral presentation of project assignment.
The teaching practice, which includes an assignment and a written report, will be evaluated.
