COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to give the student
- knowledge of the common types of information technology (IT) artefacts their different levels
and how IT can be used
- understanding of the different characteristics of IT, its differences and similarities
- critical assessments of claims made for current and future types of IT
- knowledge about the irreducible aspects of knowledge and how to structure and
manipulate it
- knowledge about the relation between human beings, social organisations and IT
- knowledge about how to put IT into a context and in connection to the other courses of the
isv-program



CONTENTS
Instead of teaching the different information technologies separated from each other they are looked upon as multimedia-systems or database-systems in which we consider both psyhchological and sociological as well as technological aspects. In an integrated framework the following aspects are considered
- the theoretical aspects of information and knowledge
- the theoretical fundamentals of IT
- the exposition of IT artefacts by multimedia, expert systems and databases
- theoretical exposition concerning the use of IT in a social context due to multimodal theory
- theoretical evaluation of IT artefacts concerning its possibilities and limitations

TEACHING
The course will comprise lectures, demonstrations, tutorials and laboratory sessions. The demonstrations will be designed to illustrate the lecture materials and present a range of different information technologies in a visual, interactive way throughout the series. Students will have opportunity to experience these at first hand and reflect upon their experience. They will also be required to plan and undertake a piece of work in the laboratory which they will be required to present.

EXAMINATION
Tutorial papers and presentations.
Grades awarded: Fail, Pass and Pass with Distinction.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: U, G and VG
