SBL001 (or equivalent).
COURSE AIM
The course will provide the basic tools for structural analysis of rocks and regions.
CONTENTS
Platetectonics: Diverging plateboundaries and ocean floor spreading. Plate boundaries at fracture zones. Converging plate boundaries and collision zones. The distribution of the continents and their movements.
Structural analysis: Descriptive geometric analysis inkluding mapping and stereographic projection. Stress and Strain. Kinematiic och dynamic analysis.
Primary structures: Primary sedimentary and volcanic structures used for structural analysis
Secondary structures: Normal and reversed faults, thrusts and nappes, Strike-slip faults. Stress distribution at faults. Folding, lineation and schistosity. Fractures and joints.
TEACHING
Tutorial including practicals.
EXAMINATION
Project work and written examination at the end of the course.
