COURSE AIM
To give the foundations of Hydraulics and Hydrology (for content see below).

CONTENTS
HYDRAULICS
Hydrostatics: Pressure, forces on submerged bodies, flotation
Principles of fluid flow: Classification of flows, the fundamental equations for fluid dynamics, conservation laws, the energy equation, the momentum equation, boundary layers
Flow in pipes and closed conduits: laminar flow, turbulent flow, frictional losses, local losses, smooth and rough boundary, pumps, system of pipes
Introduction to open channel flow: the Manning equation, uniform open channel flow
HYDROLOGY
(The hydrology part might be revised.)
The hydrological cycle: percipitation, water balance, energy balance, radiation
Evaporation: measurements, the aerodynamic method, the energy balance method, the Penman method
Runoff: The rational method, the unit hydrograph, the S-hydrograph, the time-area method, the linear reservoir method
Ground water: Darcy´s law, hydraulic conductivity, steady one-dimensional flow in open and closed aquifers, flow nets, influence of wells
Ice and snow: snow-melt, ice growth in rivers and lakes, growth of crystals, snow physics, snowpack dynamics, measurements, drift of snow
Hydropower in Sweden: Design flood, modelling, Probable Maximum Flood

TEACHING


EXAMINATION
Participation in laborations is compulsory. The course is examined by a written test.
