COURSE AIM
To give the foundations of open channel flow and design of dams and hydro power plants.
CONTENTS
Open channel flow:
Uniform and gradually varied flow: the Manning equation, hydraulic jump, sub- and supercritical flow, etc.
Hydraulic structures: Sharp-crested weirs, Contracted weirs, Vee weirs, control gates, Spillways (WES).
Surge waves: positive and negative waves, propagation speed.
Sediment transportation: design of stable alluvial channels, bottom load, suspended load, bottom configuration, critical shear stress, etc.
Dams and hydro power plants:
History of the art of building dams, different dam types, loads on dams, design of dams.
Outlet devices and reservoir regulation. Waterways, headlosses and design of hydropower plants.
Non stationary flow, wave oscillation at start and stop of hydro power plants.
