PREREQUISITES
Basic courses in hydrology och geology.
COURSE AIM
The course provides an understanding of where groundwater access is plentiful, methods of prospecting and discharging groundwater and problems associated with pollution transport. Pumping test as a method to determine aquifer characteristics as transmissivity, storage coefficient and leaking coefficient is treated. Non saturated flow in the wadoze zone is dealt with. A survey of salt water intrusion in aquifers is included and landfill hydrology and pollution transport is discussed. The construction of pumping- and observation wells is treated and flow in fractured rocks is also includes.
CONTENTS
The occurrence of groundwater in different types of rock and soil.
Transient groundwater flow. Flow with groundwater recharge. Fundamental equation of ground water flow. Confined and unconfined aquifers.
Flow nets: Vertical and horizontal nets, pressure distribution. Anisotropical nets and transmissivity determinations from flow nets.
Pumping test analysis: Theis´s and Jacob´s methods, aquifers with borders (imaginary wells), recovery data, semi-confined aquifers and aquifers with delayed yield. Practical problems.
Unsaturated flow: Soil suction curve, PF-concept, tensiometer, hysterisis, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. Methods to measure unsaturated water content.
Sea water intrusion is coastal areas.
Landfill hydrology: Water budget considerations to minimise leachate water formation, liners. Methods to measure and calculate parameters of water balance in landfills.
Ground water applications of geophysical methods.
Computer exercise. Aquifer simulation modelling in the saturated zone including pollution transport.
Construction of pumping and observation wells.
Groundwater flow in rocks.
Field pumping test.
TEACHING
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work. The laborative parts are a computer exercise with ground water simulation on a field pumping test.
