PREREQUISITES

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to present the basic theories and concepts for heat and mass
transfer as well as to enable the student to choose and dimension equipment for use in
chemical process operations. It is also the purpose of the course to describe the function
of this equipment.

CONTENTS
Heat transfer: Introduction to heat balances, overall heat transfer and film coefficients,
free and forced convection. Heat exchanging: Basic design and theory, construction
detalis, mean temperature difference, equations for counter and parallel flow, the
relation between transferred effect and heat transfer area as well as heat transfer area
and coolant flow. Mass transfer: Description of different mass transfer operations,
diffusion processes and stepwise equilibriums. Evaporation: Description of the
construction and operational modes of different evaporators, calculation and
dimensioning of evaporators, multiple effect evaporation, steam and thermo
compression. Material balances: Total and component balances. Distillation: Apparatus
for distillation, equilibrium conditions, non-ideal systems, MsCabe-Thieles method,
cost aspects. Absorption: Apparatus for absorption, equilibrium conditions, working
line, two-film theory.

TEACHING
The course is presented in the form of lectures, a tutorial and laboratory exercises. The
tutorials and the laboratory excercises are compulsory.

EXAMINATION
Approved laboratory reports, tutorials and an approved written examination with
differentiated grades. Evaluation of the written examination is performed according to
Alternative A as described in "Regler för tentamen."
COURSE GRADE SCALE: U,3,4,5

ITEMS/CREDITS
