MPP004 Mechanics of Fiber Composites 6.0 ECTS credits | |
TIMEPERIOD: Q III LANGUAGE:Swedish EXAMINER Janis Varna Univ lekt PREREQUISITES Matrix algebra and basic strenght of materials concepts COURSE AIM The course provides an understanding of the mechanics of processing and methods for the analysis of the thermomechanical performance of fiber composites. This understanding forms the basis for processing and design considerations and failure analysis of polymer structures subjected to mechanical and thermal loads. CONTENTS Applications for composites: Introduction, examples of products, properties in comparison with other materials. Properties of fibers and matrices: Glass, carbon and polymer-based fibers (ie aramid), properties, mechanisms of failure. Properties of thermoplastics and thermosets, failure mechanisms. Mechanics of load transfer at the interface. Stiffness properties: Micromechanics. Ply stiffnesses, stress, stiffness and compliance transformations. Stress and strain analysis of laminates. Laminate constitutive equations, symmetric, balanced, cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates. Strength properties: Failure mechanisms of the ply, failure criteria of the ply. Laminate failure analysis. Moisture effects and residual strains. Fatigue. Processing: Presentation of processing principles and commercial methods, mechanics of processing, cure kinetics, viscosity models, heat transfer and fluid flow. Void formation. Demonstrations of commercial methods. Design Application of methods from stiffness and strength analysis. Design philosophy, mechanical testing and quality aspects. Examples. Design of laminate according to specified demands. Fabrication and testing of the designed laminates. Comparison between results from the theoretical analyses and experimental data discussion.
