PREREQUISITES


COURSE AIM
The student should aquire:
- Enough theoretical knowledge to enable him/her to follow the future development of metallic materials.
- Knowledge about the use of important metallic engineering materials.
- Ability to understand handbooks and litterature about engineering materials.



CONTENTS
Properties of metals:
Crystalline solids and their imperfections (incl. basic dislocation theory). Diffusion and reaction kinetics. Mechanical properties, plastic deformation and failure. Hardening mechanisms. Alloys, phase diagrams and phase transformations.

Steel and its heat treatment:
Phases, alloying and various heat treatments.

Corrosion:
Basics, forms of corrosion and corr. prevention.
Oxidation.

Material classes and standards.


TEACHING
The course consists of lectures, classes, laboratory work and formal home work, of which the two last-mentioned are compulsary. The laboratory work covers optical microscopy and the use of this and other metallurgical methods on engineering materials.
