COURSE AIM
To get the student familiar with the foundations of modern optical measuring methods and to apply these methods in measurements in combination with computers.

CONTENTS
Period III
During the lessons, the following chapters in Gåsvik "Optical metrology" are treated. In connection to the lessons a series of experiments are demonstrated, see the list below.

Ch. Lessons: From Gåsvik 2nd ed.
1. Basics
3. Interference
4. Diffraction
6. Holography
7. Moire´techniques
8. Speckle methods
9. Photoelasticity and polarized light


Demonstrations:
1. Diffraction, filtering etc
2. Schlieren and shadowgraph
3. TV-holography, shearography
4. Double pulsed holography
5. Speckle photography (ESP)
6. Moire´methods

Laboratory work, period III:
Two projects of 4 hours, one from each group A/B and C/D are performed.
A. TV-holography and shearography
B. Pulsed holographic interferometry.
C. Electronic speckle photography (ESP)
D. Laser doppler anemometry (LDA)
A report is written for each project.
This part of the course ends with a written examination of 4 hours.

Period IV
During the lessons, the following chapters in Gåsvik "Optical metrology" are treated. In connection to the lessons a series of experiments are shown, see the list below. Two invited lectures about fibre optics and optics construktion.

Laboratory work, period III:
The following four projects of 4 hours are performed. Mesurements are performed using microcomputers of PC - or MAC-type to collect, treat and present the data.

E. Opto-transmitters (BIOPAC)
F. Analyses of measured data (IGOR)
G. Moire´and image analyses (IMAGE)
H. The heat camera and high speed video camera.
A report is written for each project.

TEACHING
The education consists of lessons, demonstrations and laboratory projects.
Attendance at demonstrations and laboratory projects are compulsary.


EXAMINATION
Written examination. Approved project reports.
