TIMEPERIOD: LANGUAGE:English/Swedish EXAMINER Dennis Pettersson Prof PREREQUISITES General eligibility for admission. COURSE AIM The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of industrial design and product design with respect to function and form. CONTENTS Introduction and design history (4%). The history of industrial technology with examples of typical or pioneering products. To show relations between available technology, thoughts of the time, ideals and the design of products. Terminology (4%). To make the students familiar with the terminology used within this area. Product development (10%). Briefly about companies, different areas of responsibility or funcions within a manufacturing and marketing company. The product development within companies and something about satisfying demands (from a productÕs perspective). Industrial design and comparisons (4%). To shed light on different creative tasks to avoid confusion of concepts related to design work. Different fields of knowledge are compared. The process of product development (12%).To make the students familiar with existing theories and models within product development, to show different work steps and phases within developmental work. Design methodology (32%) - Creativity - relevant aspects, creative obstacles, the constituents of creativity and different stages of creation. - Creative ways of working - Systematic problem-solving, dealing with problems, conceptions and work steps. Styling (24%) - The aim of styling - Specific expressions as a way to success - The elements of styling, colour - Product and enterprise profiles Presentation technique (6%). This part aims to give fundamental knowledge of communication theories and give practical information on how to transfer knowledge and messages to different parties in the product development. Design management (4%). Discussions about the function of design within the company. TEACHING Lectures and laboratory work. Produktdesignconsult AB, Luleå, is responsible for the lecturing. EXAMINATION All lectures are mandatory. The course ends with a written examination. Correction of examination according to alternative A in ÒRegler för tentamenÓ.
