COURSE AIM The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of psychology and sociology relevant to the future professional roles in enterprises and other organisations. Special emphasis will be on social relations in working life. CONTENTS Introduction to the psychology of work and organisations. (10%) Short history. Theory and application. Psychology as a science. (10%) Psychology in research and application. Fundamental concepts of psychology. Methodology. (10%) Correlation studies. Field experiments. Experiments. Observation methodology. Ex post facto studies. The individual within the organisation. (15%) Selection and assessment. Issues of recruitment. Skill acquisition. Learning. Motivation psychology. (10%) Theories of motivation. Psychosocial perspectives. Work satisfaction Introduction to sociology. (10%) Sociology as a science. Short history. Groups within the organisation. (20%) Management theories. The individual and the group. The dynamics of group formation. Decision making in groups. Sex roles. Minority problems. Working life and health. (15%) Stress. Drugs. Cognitive work environmental problems. TEACHING The lecturing is devoted to theoretical matters and certain assignments. A project work involving an investigation of an organisation outside the university will be carried out. EXAMINATION The course will be graded on written examination and approved project work.
