Civil and Mining Engineering

ABS008 Structural Engineering II 6.0 ECTS credits

TIMEPERIOD:
Q I

LANGUAGE:English/Swedish

EXAMINER
Ove Lagerqvist Univ lekt

PREREQUISITES
ABB006 Structural Mechanics, ABB007 Structural Mechanics II and ABS006 Structural Engineering.

COURSE AIM
The scope of the course is to give basic knowledge concerning design of steel structures and concrete slabs for houses and industrial buildings. The student shall after participating in the course have obtained understanding in how to design ordinary structural elements as steel beams, steel columns, bolted and welded connections as well as concrete slabs.

CONTENTS
Steel Structures (75%):
Design of steel structures for houses and industrial buildings
Material and product standards, design codes (BKR and BSK 94)
Columns in compression and tension bars
Elastic and plastic behaviour of beams
Instability, local buckling, column buckling, cross section classes, interaction between bending
and shear and bending and compression
Static theorem in plastic analysis, plastic hinge analysis of beams
Welded connections, welding techniques, weld materials, design of welds in static loading
Bolted connections, products, design of bolted connections in static loading
Concrete Structures (25%):
Understanding in load action of concrete slabs (for instance in ordinary housing and office buildings)
Analysis and estimation of bending and axial forces
Design of necessary thickness, reinforcement and calculation of load capacity in views of different methods; yield line theory, strip method, and simplified usage of tables, creation of drawings of reinforcement.

ASSIGNMENTS
Steel structures: The students shall design a steel structure for a one storey industrial building including columns, beams, welded and bolted connections. For approval, the assignment should be presented with calculations as well as drawings.
Concrete structures: The task is to design a concrete slab in accordance with the different methods presented in the course and to produce a drawing of reinforcement. Comparision between different methods.

LABORATIONS
Concrete structures: The students shall produce a reinforced concrete slab. The slab is thereafter loaded until failure. The experimental capacity with the theorethical value.

TEACHING
The course is given in the form of lectures, assignments and laborations.

EXAMINATION
Grades of acceptance for the course: 3, 4, 5
Acceptance of the course requires accepted written exam as well as accepted assignments and laborations.
