PREREQUISITES
German A, 30 credits and German B, 30 credits. However, students may start the course if they have passed at least 24 credits on the B course.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to provide increased fluency when using German in speech and writing as well as to provide broader knowledge of the German language and the literature, culture and social conditions of the German-speaking countries. Moreover, the student is to be given practice in producing an original piece of work in one of the fields of research for the subject.

CONTENTS
Module 1. Language proficiency, 3 credits. Module 2. Advanced course in linguistics, 6 credits. Module 3. Advanced course in the history of literature, 6 credits. Module 4. Special project, 15 credits.

TEACHING


EXAMINATION
Module 1. The written proficiency will be assessed by a translation from Swedish into German comprising 225-250 words and with continuous assessment of written assignments (1.5 credits). The oral proficiency will be assessed in class (1.5 credits). Module 2. The course will end with a written test (4 credits). Module 3. Continuous assessment in class and a final oral examination (4 credits). Module 4. The special project is normally assessed in the form of an essay comprising around 25 pages. The students will be given the opportunity to report on how their work is progressing and to discuss common problems. At the end of the term the special project will be submitted. During the term the students should have regular meetings with the superviser. The project will be presented and defended at the final seminar. Defending their own work is compulsory. All tests will be graded as above. To receive Pass with Distinction for the course the students are required to have Pass with Distinction for at least 15 credits. If a student is failed twice on a test for a certain course or part of a course he/she has the right to request that another teacher assesses his/her grade.
