PREREQUISITES
English A, 30 credits. However, students may begin the course if they have passed at least 24 credits on the A-course.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to provide comprehensive skills for using English in speech and writing and in-depth knowledge within English linguistics and the history of literature as well as within a field that is chosen taking into consideration special interests of the students. The intention of the course is to provide basic knowledge and proficiency for teaching in schools as well as for other activities involving foreign languages.

CONTENTS
The course consists of four compulsory modules and one optional. COMPULSORY MODULES Module 1. Written proficiency (6 credits). Module 2. Oral proficiency (3 credits). Module 3. Linguistic review course (4.5 credits). Module 4. Literary survey course, Literature 1, (7.5 credits). OPTIONAL MODULES Group 1 The students can choose between one of these two modules: Module 5. The history of language (3 credits). Module 6. Literature 2 (3 credits). Group 2 The students can choose between one of these three modules: Module 7. Business English (6 credits). Module 8. Language learning (6 credits). Module 9. Literature 3 (6 credits).

TEACHING


EXAMINATION
Note: Modules that do not end with a written test are usually compulsory. COMPULSORY MODULES Module 1. Translation test (3 credits). Essay test (3 credits). Module 2. Continuous assessment of pronunciation and oral fluency (2 credits). Module 3. Grammar and linguistic theory (4.5 credits). Module 4. Continuous assessment of the assignments and written test (7.5 credits). Group 1 Module 5. Written test (3 credits). Module 6. Active participation in group discussions and individual assignments (3 credits). Group 2 Module 7. Written test. The final assessment will take into consideration the results of the written test as well as the achievements of the students both in oral and written exercises (6 credits). Module 8. Individual written test. The final assessment will take into consideration the achievements of the students during seminar exercises. If there are less than six students the written test can be replaced by an individual oral one (6 credits). Module 9. Active participation in group discussions and two individual assignments. All modules will be graded as above. To receive Pass with Distinction for the course the students are required to have Pass with Distinction for at least 18 credits, where at least 3 credits should be included from module 1, Written proficiency. Students who do not pass the tests will have the opportunity to take a resit. If a student is failed twice on a test for a certain course or part of a course he/she has the right to request that another teacher assesses his/her grade, according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 7, section 6.
