COURSE AIM
At the end of the course the student should be able
¥ to demonstrate that she or he has acquired statistical thinking;
¥ to demonstrate understanding for variation and for the importance of taking variation into consideration when doing statistical reasoning;
¥ to apply the different elements of a statistical survey;
¥ to apply some statistical methods for collecting and analysing data, especially from the fields of economics, business, and social sciences;
¥ to use statistical software when analysing data;
¥ to search in the national and international official production of statistics;
¥ to present, both orally and in writing, statistical results and analyses.
CONTENTS
The course deals with the design of sample surveys and questionnaires, as well as exploring and summarizing data (including EDA). Different index numbers are studied and basic concepts in probability and statistics like the concept of random variables, measure of location and spread, distributions, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing are dealt with. Furthermore, simple regression analysis is treated.
