COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to give the basics in structural design and limit state design using the Swedish building code. In the framework of two courses, structural engineering part I and II, the use of steel, wood and concrete in structural design are described. Part I is focused on limit state design, timber structures and concrete structures. In part II steel structures and concrete slabs are described.
CONTENTS
Limit state design, action on structures, codes: (20%).
Timber structures: (25%) Bending and shear capacity of beams. Lateral flexure and flexural buckling of columns, joints.
Concrete structures: (55%). The strength of concrete: compression and tension failure. Reinforced concrete beams, bending, shear and torsion capacity. Lateral flexure and flexural bucking of columns.
TEACHING
Teaching will take the form of lectures and project works.
Project work: 3 compulsory assignments (action on structures, timber truss and concrete beam).
Laboratory work: 2 compulsory laboratory tests.
EXAMINATION
A written exam is given. To pass examination students must have approved project works and laboratory tests.
