COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to provide a general understanding of the function of landfills and to provide the practical skills necessary for professional activity in the field. Important topics are - waste characterization; treatment oportunities and risks. - anaerobic microbiology; conversion processes in landfills. - landfill design and management. - emission control; unit processes for leachate & gas management. - soil chemistry; soil as recipient, implications for siting. Within these topics the course is designed to provide operational skills, e g for dimensioning of gas abstraction systems.

CONTENTS
Introduction The landfills role and function in waste management. Waste treatment and landfill strategies. Landfill design & management The function of different types of landfills, design of landfills (constructional parts and functions). Operation of landfills and closing of landfills. Field visit. Engineering geology and geotechnical evaluation. Important quartanary formations with regard to landfill siting and foundation. Characteristic soil profiles and soil types. Planning and performing geotechnical investigations for the siting and design of landfills. Waste characterization Physical and chemical properties of different wastes. Mechanical properties that affects landfilling techniques. Degradability and pollution potential. Risk evaluation. Landfill biology Mikrobiological processes in landfills, dependence on and influence of landfill environment. Vegetation of landfills. Emission abatement, leachate and landfill gas. Quality of leachate and gas from landfills and how its influenced by different factors. Techniques to treat and limit emissions. Soil chemistry Movement of organic and inorganic pollutants in soils. Filter and barrier functions of soils and how these functions are influenced by different factors. Law Over-view of the laws affecting the establishment and operation of landfills. Environmental audits.

TEACHING
The course contains lectures, site visits, laboratory excercises and construction tasks. The construction task is designed to take the student throught siting, design and environmental impact analysis. A geographical information tool is used in this the task. The task is presented in writing and orally. Laboratory exercises The laboratory excersises runs thoughout the course. Different experimental investigations of relevance for waste characterization and emission control is performed. The excersises are reported in writing.

EXAMINATION
Written exam with graded notes.
