PREREQUISITES
MTM062 Strength of materials, Solid mechanics and machine elements

COURSE AIM
The course will give fundamental skills in finite element analysis and modelling. It will also give theoretical knowledge of principles and methods in the finite element method.

CONTENTS
Geometric modelling (5%) Fundamental principles and techniques for finite element modelling will be covered. Finite element method (95%) The course begins with matrix formulated stiffness method and repetition of general formulas in solid and structural mechanics. The equilibrium configuration of a system is found by analysis of its potential energy. Expressions for potential energy are presented. These and other integral expressions are introduced as starting point for an approximation technique called Ritz method. The modern form of this technique is finite element method (FEM). The equations of FEM are formulated in general and then in detail for an elastic plane plate element. Isoparametric element formulation and the use of FEM for dynamic analysis of structures are discussed.

TEACHING
The education consist of lectures, exercises and computer exercises. Participation in computer exercises are compulsory.

EXAMINATION
Fulfilled computer exercises and a written examination at the end of the course.
