COURSE AIM
To give the students the possibility to - manage everyday language situations - present themselves and their backgrounds - inform others of their interests and opinions - participate in teacher guided conversations - read and understand simple Swedish texts - express themselves grammatically correctly and pronounce Swedish so they are easily understood - learn about Sweden, Swedish culture and Swedish society and in particular the conditions in Norrbotten.

CONTENTS
Module 1. The course should provide the first foundations of the Swedish language based on communication aspects. Pronunciation exercises and exercises in linguistic correctness. Facts about Sweden and the Swedes; Luleå, the University and the local environment. (3 credits) Module 2. The course should provide the students with the possibility to participate in everyday Swedish language situations, mainly orally but also in writing. (4.5 credits)

TEACHING
Besides language lessons there will be lessons in cultural studies and discussions around current topics. Taped programmes and computer programmes.

EXAMINATION
Continuous assessment and part examination. A final written test where listening comprehension, reading comprehension and written production will be assessed. The course comprises 7.5 credits. For these to be registered the students are required to participate actively and to receive Pass for the final test. The students who do not pass the ordinary tests will have the opportunity to take a resit.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass
