PREREQUISITES
General eligibility with at least grade 3 from a 3 year upper secondary school course programme or equivalent qualifications.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to provide a firm foundation for using German practically in speech and writing and some knowledge of the literature and the cultural, political and social conditions of German-speaking countries today. The course consists of grammar, literature and cultural studies.

CONTENTS
Module 1. German grammar with introduction to linguistics, 6 credits. Module 2. Written proficiency, 6 credits. Module 3. Active participation, 7.5 credits. Module 4. German literature, 6 credits . Module 5. Cultural studies of the German-speaking countries, 4.5 credits.

TEACHING


EXAMINATION
Module 2. Written test divided into several parts at the end of the term with a monolingual grammar test, translation from and into German and a shorter essay (6 credits). Module 3. Written test in phonetics (1.5 credits), oral pronunciation and intonation test (1.5 credits), and assessment of the oralĘproficiency from the conversation module (4.5 credits) Module 4. Continuous assessment of participation in the seminars (3 credits) and a written report related to the course material (1.5 credits). Module 5. Individual assignments to be presented in class, which should also be submitted in written form (4.5 credits). All tests will be graded as above. To receive Pass with Distinction for the entire course the students are required to have Pass with Distinction for at least 18 credits; which should include the tests in oral and written language proficiency. Students who do not pass the ordinary tests will have the opportunity to take a resit. At the end of August there is a resit for students that do not pass the tests at the end of the Spring term. The students that pass the tests can not resit them to obtain higher grades. Attendance at the seminars is compulsory in the modules where no tests are given.
