COURSE AIM
The main aim of the course is to improve language skills and to establish a firm foundation for the practical usage of French. These skills should include a good comprehension of French non-fiction and everyday spoken language as well as the ability to express themselves in relatively good French both orally and in writing. The course should also provide a basic knowledge of the cultural, political, social and economic conditions in France.

CONTENTS
Module 1. Oral proficiency, 1.5 credits. Pronunciation and phonetics Listening comprehension Speech practice Oral skills Module 2. Written language proficiency training, 1.5 credits. Grammar Writing practices (translation, essays, summaries, dictation) Module 3. Text course, 1.5 credits. Circa 500 pages of text ( modern fiction, non-fiction and newspaper texts) Module 4. Cultural studies, 1.5 credits. The conditions of the French society An overview of French history and geography

TEACHING
Some of the teaching will be in form of lectures but the greater part will be in classes in which the active participation of the students will be an integral part of their linguistic training. There will also be different group exercises.

EXAMINATION
Examination module 2 will end with a translation test and module 4 with a written test. Active participation is required as is completion of the oral and written assignments. Tests and grading. Students who do not pass the ordinary tests will have the opportunity to take a resit. The course will be graded as above. The students that pass the tests can not resit them to obtain higher grades.
