PREREQUISITES
Eligibility for course admission to begin the study programme in Recreational and Leisure Education.

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is: - to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about language learning. - to give the students an insight into and information about the goals and methods in teaching English as a foreign language and about how to encourage schoolchildren when they start to learn English. - to improve the students' language structures, vocabulary and English for teaching purposes based on an established level of language skills. - to develop the communicative competence of the students.

CONTENTS
- what the curriculum and research say about language teaching and language learning. - the contents, methods and procedures involved in teaching English in primary and secondary schools. - formation of concepts and language learning in school child-care - goals, means and methods. - communicative competence. - how children needing special support can learn English. - the English heritage, inter-cultural understanding and social studies. - knowledge of songs and games that provide skills to stimulate schoolchildren when starting to learn English. - language stimulation for pupils with another native language.

TEACHING
The course includes lectures and general meetings with discussions about the course contents, combined with practical, illustrative teaching examples and exercises. Seminars and group discussions about the course literature and assignments will also be held. A native teacher should also be involved in teaching the course.

EXAMINATION
The students will be graded on assignment reports that are given within the framework for the aim and contents of the course. Active participation is expected in class, seminars and group discussions.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail, Pass
