PREREQUISITES

COURSE AIM
The objective of the course is to give the students knowledge about industrial chemical processes and their use in manufacturing of chemical products in modern process industry.

CONTENTS
The extent of different parts of the course is given in %. Introduction, chemical industry (9%). Historical retrospect, chemical products and chemical companies. Classification of chemical products. Characteristics of the chemical industry. Pulp and paper industry (18%). Wood chemistry. Pulping processes. Bleaching. Paper qualities. Environmental aspects. Heterogenous catalysis (9%). Theory of heterogenous catalysis. Different types of catalysts. Manufacture and use of catalysts. Surfactants (9%). Different types of surfactants, their properties and preparation. Detergents. Environmental aspects. Oxiding agents and sodium hydroxide (14%). Production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide. Oxygen and air separation. Hydrogen peroxide. Synthesis gas (4%). Steam reforming. Partial oxidation. Ammonia and inorganic acids (18%). Manufacture and use of ammonia, nitric acid, phosphric acid, sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Fertilizers and explosives. Petrochemical industry (10%). Refinery processes. Petroleum products. Petrochemical processes and products. Polymer technology (9%). Different types of polymerization reactions. Plastics.

TEACHING
The course is presented in the form of lectures and a major project assignment. The project is performed in groups of 4-6 students.

EXAMINATION
Written examination with differentiated grades. Evaluation of the written examination is performed according to Alternative B in "regler för tentamen". The project assignment is reported in the form of a written report and an oral presentation of the results.
