PREREQUISITES

COURSE AIM
The course will give a deeper knowledge of chemical reactions between metallic melts, slags and lining materials and the structure and property of mineral products. The course covers the following topics: the structure and property of mineral products, thermodynamics of solutions, crystallography, reaction kinetics, phase diagrams and technical applications.

CONTENTS
The content of each moment is given in %. Thermodynamics (17 %) Standard states and the relation between standard states, partial molar quantities, ideal and non-ideal solutions, mixing quantities in concentrated solutions, Sieverts law. Crystallography (8 %) The crystal structure of metals and oxides, amorphous structures, glasses, structure determination, crystal defects and diffusion. Phase diagrams (25 %) The phase rule, one- two- and three-component systems, construction of phase diagrams, phase analysis diagrams, non equilibrium phases and reactions. Kinetic (8 %) Homogenous and heterogeneous reaction kinetics, phase transformation, TTT diagrams, solid-solid reactions, grain growth. Technical applications (42 %) Sintering, methods of manufacturing, the physical and mechanical properties of ceramics, firebricks, heavy and light lining materials, construction ceramics, ceramic coatings, the influence of different furnace atmospheres, choosing firebricks in melting and heating furnaces. Plastic deformation of metals. Heat treatment. Corrosion

TEACHING
The teaching consists of lessons, industry project, and laboratory exercises.
