COURSE AIM
Item 1. General chemistry The course provides basic knowledge and skills in chemistry. Item 2. Organic chemistry and biochemistry. The course provides basic knowledge and skills in organic chemistry and biochemistry.

CONTENTS
Item 1. Fundamental concepts and general laboratory skills. Inorganic nomenclature and chemical equations. Ideal and real gases. Gas kinetics Basic thermochemistry and thermodynamics. The structure of the atom and the periodic table. Chemical bonding and molecular orbital theory. The acid-base concept. Chemical equilibria in homogenous and heterogeneous systems. Item 2. Chemical bonding in organic chemistry Structure and isomerism Physical and chemical properties of organic compounds Reaction mechanisms Methods of analysis and purification of organic compounds Synthetic and natural polymers Metabolic processes, organisation and regulation The organisation and expression of the genetic material Recombinant DNA-techniques

TEACHING
The instruction consists of lectures and laboratory classes. The laboratory classes are compulsory.

EXAMINATION
Written exams, which are graded. Laboratory reports.
