PREREQUISITES
Basic qualifications.

COURSE AIM
The course provides basic knowledge in general , organic and biochemistry.The items discussed here are crucial for an understanding of many of future chemistry related courses. The course also gives some experience in basic laboratory work.

CONTENTS
Part one : structure of the atom and of molecules and their intra- and intermolecular forces. Part two.: stoichiometry, chemical equations, thermodynamics, chemical equilibria in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. Problem solving is of capital intrest. Part three : introduction in organic and biochemistry. Organic compounds and structures, isomerism, functional groups and their reactions; lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids.

TEACHING
The instruction consists of lectures, lessons and 3 compulsory laboratory classes. Assignments are introduced during lectures of part three.

EXAMINATION
A written examination which is graded (part one and/or two), passed individual assignments (part two and/or three) and laboratory reports. Grading of the examination according to alternative A in "Regler för tentamen".
