COURSE AIM
AIM OF COURSE - To give an understanding of the historical, geographical, political and economical conditions in the former USSR and Eastern Europe. - To train the students ability to independently treat questions of issue in political science by writing and defending a thesis.

CONTENTS
CONTENTS Course A: - A briefing of the political systems in the former USSR, with emphasis on Russia and Eastern Europe. - A briefing of the historical development until 1989. - An analysis of the communist systems fall with an outlook both from economic and political conditions. - Political events during the last five years and the attempt to build a democratic society. Course B: - An analysis of problem issues that will be dealth with in the students thesis. - The thesis should shed light on actual political situations in Eastern Europe. - Studies in economi, history, environment or the technical development can also be used as a background to political events.

EXAMINATION
Written exam, oral tests and written thesis with opposition assignment. Grading system: Fail, Pass or Honours.
