COURSE AIM


CONTENTS
Sociological theory and analysis, (6p) This part aims at giving a deeper understanding of the classic works and main traditions of sociology, principally within European and north American research. The emphasis will be on current sociological research as well as training in critical examination of the theoretical basis of sociological research and its empirical results. Organisational Sociology (4p) This part aims at giving a deepened understanding of classic works in organisational theory as well as giving the students analytical skills to perform organisational analyses on their own. This part will also give in-depth knowledge of different techniques such as observations, interviews and questionnaires. Medical Sociology (5p) The emphasis on this course will be on the specialisation in medical sociology that describes and analyses differences in health between socially defined groups such as social class and gender and the importance of socially related elements such as the work environment. This course deals with the development of the panoramic view of illness, principally in Sweden, and considers fundamental demographic and epidemiological concepts. In-depth Study of Scientific Method (5p) This part aims at giving the students in-depth understanding of the sociological research process concentrating on both quantitative and qualitative methods for analysis and interpretation. The aim is to examine different sociological traditions regarding research strategies and methods. This part is to be concluded by an individual report in the form of a theoretical and/or empirical work in conjunction with chosen field.
