PREREQUISITES
Physical Environmental Technology (ARF 005) or Technical Acoustics (ARF 001).

COURSE AIM
The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of - the acoustic, mechanical and electrical principles that control the functions of loudspeakers - prediction methods and computer modelling tools for loudspeaker function modelling - room acoustic principles that control the reproduction of speech and music in rooms - prediction methods and computer modelling tools for room acoustic simulations - psycho acoustic principles about how human beings perceive sound - computer based measurement methods for electro acoustic evaluations

CONTENTS
- The transformation of electrical power into acoustic power. - Function principles of loudspeaker drivers. - Structure acoustics of vibrating plates. - Radiation of sound from vibrating bodies. - Prediction methods for sound field and sound propagation calculations in closed volumes. - Prediction methods for electrical filter calculations. - Fundamentals of psycho acoustics. - Room acoustic planning for music reproduction. - Computer modelling of room acoustics with ray tracing. - Computer modelling of loudspeaker performance. Linear and non-linear effects. - Measurement technology. Stationary and transient signals.

TEACHING
The teaching will be a mixture of problem based learning and lecturing. A larger project will give application examples and the need for theory background. The course introduction will be in the form of a condensed theoretical and problem orienting part. Thereafter the project will proceed with lectures in selected topics that coincide with the project. The proportions will be around 35 % theory and 65 % project

EXAMINATION
Written examination at the middle of the course. Project reports at the end of the course with grades. Oral and written presentation of the project. Written reports from the experiments.
COURSE GRADE SCALE: Fail,3,4,5
