PREREQUISITES
General. Basic knowledge in geology advisable but not mandatory.

COURSE AIM
By attending the course, students should be able to gain knowledge about the final stages of the nuclear fuel life cycle with special attention to geological disposal of nuclear waste. Further students should be able to critically examine and answer questions raised by the society concerning final disposal of nuclear waste in the rock. The objective of the course is also to get an idea about planning and consequence analysis of large projects with strong conflicting interests or environmental impacts.

CONTENTS
Production of nuclear power in Sweden, different types of nuclear waste products, handling, transport and intermediate storage. Different methods of recycling of used nuclear fuel. Disposal at depth and questions related to geosciences, constructions in rock, surface plants and transportation. Siting of a nuclear waste repository. Influences on the social life, economy and industries. Safety analysis, impacts on environment due to storage at depth, planning and evaluation details. Acts and regulations concerning nuclear waste managemen.

TEACHING
The teaching will include classroom lectures, seminars and a group project work. A visit to the nuclear power plant, intermediat storage facility and underground research laboratory at Oskarshamn and Äspö is planned.

EXAMINATION
Written test with graded point/marks. Approval of the project work is a must. Oral presentation of group work.
