PREREQUISITES
Basic knowledge of soil mechanics including soil physics and basic soil behavior. Stress-strain relationships in soils. Mean streses and deviatoric stresses. Effective stress and consolidation theory. Bearing capacity of shallow foundations. Consolodation theory and calculation of settlements. Earth pressure against retaining walls. Slope stability with cylindrical slip surface. Common laboratory methods.

COURSE AIM
To provide understanding of the principles of foundation engineering in order to make it possible for the engineer to solve foundation engineering problems, involving shallow and deep foundations. The aim is also to provide knowledge of some design methods for anchored and cantilever sheet pile walls as well as for anchors. The curriculum covered is: - soil investigations and explorations (20%) - foundation engineering (60%) - sheet pile walls and anchors (20%).

CONTENTS
Ground investigation and exploration (20%) Subsurface exploration program. Procedures for ground explorations and for soil-sampling. Exploratory borings in the field. Soil exploration report. Foundation engineering (60%) Choice of foundation method from a technical and economical point of view. Design of shallow and deep foundations in homogenous and leyered soils. Pile foundations. Bearing capacity of a single end-bearing pile and of a single friction pile. Design of pile groups. Settlement of piles and pile groups. Sheet pile walls (20%) Active and passive earth pressure. Wall friction. Stability. Anchored and cantilever sheet pile walls. Anchors and anchor design.

TEACHING
Teaching is given in classes, including problem solving and discussions. Six assignments are solved individually by the students.
